WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2006 (PSP)

Posted by Gamer Boy

Information

Gameplay is completely intact, and just as superb as it was on the PlayStation 2 Tons of different modes, including ad hoc multiplayer and the new general manager mode some of the best graphics you'll find on the system great voice work from the wrestlers plenty of creation and customization options. The Bad Collision detection is still periodically problematic artificial intelligence definitely has its dumb spots general manager mode feels more like a starting point for better things in the future than a fully fleshed-out mode Long load times and bad minigames are really the only things that differ from the PS2 game No online play. Released earlier this year on the PlayStation 2, WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006 got the acclaimed wrestling franchise back on the right track and delivered some of the best wrestling gameplay of this generation. As is the way of things nowadays, SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006 is appearing on the PSP in the form of a pretty straightforward port. Impressively, this version includes basically every single fundamental feature of the PlayStation 2 game, and it suffers no setbacks in control or gameplay whatsoever. The presentation holds up its end of the bargain too, featuring graphics that are quite impressive for the PSP's capabilities, and there is very little of the audio missing. So if you never bothered to grab the original game when it hit last month, then the PSP version is just as worth looking at as its console counterpart. But, if you did buy the game on the PS2 already, there's really not much here to convince you that you should buy the same game twice. The scant collection of mediocre minigames that Yuke's has included to try to give the game its own, exclusive content are pretty much worthless, and the loading times inherent to the PSP version make certain features, such as the create-a-wrestler mode, a real chore to deal with. Still, for those who simply want a version of this year's best wrestling game to take with them on the go, SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006 on the PSP fits the bill nicely..

Mega Man Powered Up (PSP)

Posted by Gamer Boy

Information

Portable, Mega Man has gone from extreme to extremely adorable. Whereas Maverick Hunter X, released last month, was a remake of the original Mega Man X for the SNES using updated 3D visuals and some revamped cutscenes and character designs, Mega Man Powered Up goes back even further into the Mega Man lore--all the way back to the beginning, in fact. Powered Up is a remake of the very first Mega Man for the NES, using a similar method of upgrading. But where Maverick Hunter X was mostly content to just redo the original game with an additional playable character and some shuffled power-up locations, Powered Up goes the extra mile, making all of its various bosses unlockable, playable characters, revamping many of the core level designs, and adding a whole mess of crazy challenge minigames, as well as a full-fledged level editor. Beneath all the gloss though, this is still the original Mega Man you might have played nearly 20 years ago. But through it all, the gameplay still holds up, even in this day and age..

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (PSP)

Posted by Gamer Boy

Information

The parts may seem commonplace, but Puzzle Quest's blend of RPG and puzzle-game convention makes for something refreshingly unique and dangerously addictive. The Good RPG context adds depth to familiar puzzle gameplay Puzzle gameplay makes traditional RPG structure way more addictive Lush soundtrack Main quest is ridiculously long. The Bad Enemies can be frustrating, even early on Pauses briefly at random. For as often as developers attempt to marry distinct game genres hoping for a peanut-butter-and-chocolate-like result, they usually come out more peanut-butter-and-onion. Infinite Interactive's Puzzle Quest is one of the rare exceptions, and the way in which it integrates familiar puzzle gameplay into a traditional Japanese RPG format makes for an experience that is far greater than the sum of its parts. The way these disparate elements play off each other helps make it an incredibly difficult game to put down, and it finds a smart balance between accessibility, challenge, and variety that makes it an easy game to recommend to just about anyone..

Crush (PSP)

Posted by Gamer Boy

Information

Crush is a one-of-a-kind action puzzle game, and its unique concept makes for a refreshing and bizarre experience. The Good Crushing mechanic is refreshingly unique thoroughly explores the relationship between 2D and 3D levels become harder and more complex at a manageable pace distorted presentation complements the subject matter it's a puzzle game with a story worth following. The Bad Would have benefited from more levels. Genuine originality in video games is rare, and when it comes to puzzle games, doubly so. Even some of the best, most recent examples of the genre, such as D3's inventive Puzzle Quest, have merely been really good amalgams of well-established game concepts. Crush for the PlayStation Portable is an action puzzle game that owes very little of its novel concept to games that preceded it, and it capitalizes on its M.C. Escher-inspired gameplay with a healthy number of increasingly involved puzzles. It's challenging without being too frustrating, and it's easily one of the more unique puzzle games to come around in years..

Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow (PSP)

Posted by Gamer Boy

Information

Syphon Filter returns on the PSP, and it can still kill your spare time. The Good Decent campaign is fun to play and replay Great bonus content Robust online play options return Excellent production values make the PSP screen sparkle. The Bad Stupid, nonsensical plot is unintentionally funny As are the stupid, nonsensical enemies. Without a shadow of a doubt, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror was one of the most impressive sleeper hits of 2006. It combined a decent single-player campaign with robust online multiplayer and rejuvenated an aging PlayStation series all while scoring a headshot for the struggling PSP. So its recently released sequel, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, has a heck of an act to follow, which is exactly what it does. From the structure of the single-player campaign and the enemies to the puzzles and the online multiplayer, Logan's Shadow follows in its predecessor's footsteps like a sneaking spy. While it isn't likely to catch you unawares, you'll still be happy to act surprised..

LocoRoco 2 (PSP)

Posted by Gamer Boy

Information

Still hands-down the cutest franchise on the PSP, LocoRoco 2 adds enough new ideas to its already unique gameplay to make it a great improvement on the original game. The Good Cute as ever LocoRocos have some neat new abilities Great level design Lots to collect in all levels. The Bad Easy boss fights. AU REVIEW--The first LocoRoco was like an injection of sugar syrup directly to the brain, and its cute design and catchy soundtrack made it a tough game to dislike even if you found faults with its unique but ultimately repetitive gameplay. LocoRoco 2 improves on its predecessor in almost every aspect, with new play mechanics and even more minigames wrapped around the same blob-bouncing interior. It's still a game best played in short bursts, but when you do spend time in the shiny, squishy world that the LocoRocos inhabit, it's hard not to get swept along by its infectious cheeriness..
